Current Research Opportunities for UA Students (Undergraduate and Graduate)

C. Earle Smith, Jr. Slide Digitization Project
This archival project involves scanning and organizing data related to a series of slides from a collection that belonged to Professor C. Earle Smith, Jr. of the University of Alabama. 

Modern Seed Database and Website Project
This project involves photographing the seed reference collection housed in APPL using the microscope photography station, organizing the photographs and data into a relational database, and working with e-Tech on campus to create a website that can be accessed by scholars and the general public interested in seed identification.

Chili Pepper Seed Identification and Machine Learning Project
This project involves photographing and measuring wild and domesticated chili pepper (Capsicum spp.) seeds to address issues surrounding the identification of archaeological remains through machine learning.

Chili Pepper Seed Charring Experiments
This project examines the effects of charring 
on the morphology of modern chili pepper (Capsicum spp.) seeds under a variety of experimental conditions. 

Cerro Chepén GIS and 3D Visualization Project
This project involves work on building the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database associated with the Moche site of Cerro Chepén located in Peru's north coast region and on the creation of 3D models of commoner house structures. 

University of Alabama Foodscapes Project
This project involves work with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and survey data to study the health-, accessibility-, and cost-related aspects of the University of Alabama "foodscape." 

Department of Anthropology Public Relations Team
Throughout the year, we will be re-working the UA Department of Anthropology website, editing design elements, adding more multimedia components, collecting information about employment for anthropologists, and highlighting the accomplishments of current and former students.
